MY INSTRUMENT

MY INSTRUMENT

Domra alto is Russian three-stringed plucked instrument. It has common historical origins with balalaika, mandolin, lute, dombra etc. The instrument was given its present appearance after the reconstruction by distinguished Russian musician and public figure V. Andreyev in the late XIX century. Domra alto attracts music lovers by its tender, velvety timbre and expressive sound throughout time.

The instrument is playing an important role in Russian orchestras and ensembles of national instruments. However, it is known only few compositions for solo alto domra and piano or orchestra between the 1890s and the 1960s.

Virtuoso potential of domra alto as solo instrument was revealed for composers in the last quarter of the XX century inspired by playing of V. Rommel (Astrakhan), M. Gorobtsov (Moscow), N. Sviridov (Leningrad) and others. In the next decades, concert repertoire for the instrument was created by S. Gubaidulina, T. Sergeeva, N. Peyko, M. Bronner, E. Podgaits, M. Zeiger, A. Larin, G. Zaitcev and many others. In 2005 The Symphony-Concerto for alto domra and symphony orchestra was created by S. Slonimsky.

Modern tradition of domra alto elaboration begins with works of “Stradivarius of balalaika” S. Nalimov, famous musical master at the turn XIX—XX centuries. Nalimov’s instruments are characterized by rich and deep timbre and became partially standard for modern masters. The instrument I’m playing made by G. Smygin in Moscow at 2013. It has strings special requested on MPKMI of P. Tchaikovsky’s Fundation.
